Goodfellow is home to the historic 17th Training Wing whose mission today is to Train, Develop, and Inspire Exceptional Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance and Fire Protection Professionals for America and Her Allies
Our daily student load of Service members is a remarkable 4,000 personnel. Teaching more than 700 courses, the wing graduates over 14,000 of the best trained firefighting and ISR warriors in the world each year. This includes international officers from over 40 Allied nations.
The base was initially established as San Angelo Air Corps Basic Flying School on August 17, 1940. On June 11, 1941, the base was officially renamed Goodfellow Field in honor of San Angelo native First Lieutenant John Goodfellow who was killed flying a reconnaissance mission over enemy territory in France during the first World War.
