Historic Environment Scotland was formed in October 2015 following the merger between Historic Scotland and The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.
When we talk about the ‘historic environment’, we mean physical evidence for human activity that connects people and places. This might be an ancient stone circle, a medieval castle, or Georgian townscape. It could be a factory, battlefield or shipwreck. Or it can mean artefacts and archive material – maps, drawings, photographs and books that relate to Scotland’s history.
